PALM, Mexico - Mexico's government is warning pharmacies about its pharmacy drug pricing that's meant to keep drug prices low.
The Food and Drug Administration on Thursday said it will issue an advisory on the pricing of a wide range of drugs for erectile dysfunction (ED) and to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH).
The warning comes after a Mexican court ruled that it's the "own and sole cause" of drug prices in the country. It was issued after the country's central bank announced the $4.3-billion (about $5,800 million) in savings for U. S. residents.
"It's an important step in protecting patients and the public from dangerous and ineffective treatments," Dr. Miguel Angel Lopez-Lopez, the Mexican-American Society of Pneumonia and Related Diseases' president, told the Mexico City-based news outlet
"We're looking forward to working with the Mexican government to find an alternative."
The price for the drug Levofloxacin was $4.25 from Mexico on Sunday, but it's now reduced to $4.50 for the remainder of the month.
The price of doxycycline is expected to rise, up from $.40 in July.
"It's important to be aware of the fact that there are now several drugs that are being marketed with high drug costs and that's when our local pharmacies are not making sure that they are buying drugs from patients," Dr. Angel Lopez-Lopez said.
The U. market for doxycycline was $1.16 in July, up about 3 percent from the same month in July.
Drug prices in Mexico are not regulated, but pharmacies can offer discounts, including the cost of a prescription and a larger, more expensive pack of their drugs, said Dr. Angel Lopez-Lopez.
"They offer a range of different medicines that are in a particular strength, so there's no risk of different brands being available to you," she told the outlet.
According to the Mexican health officials, the price of doxycycline is expected to increase by more than 90 percent.
"There's a very high level of concern in Mexico right now, but the U. drug pricing is extremely low," she added.
Dr. Angel Lopez-Lopez said the price for erectile dysfunction drugs, such as doxycycline, is not regulated in the U. and is not expected to go up as the government monitors the cost.
The price for doxycycline, the second drug in the doxycycline range, is currently $.40 in July.
According to the Mexican health officials, the price for erectile dysfunction drugs, including doxycycline, is currently $.60 in July.
